What makes a Veo 3 prompt work

  • 01

    One shot per prompt

Each prompt describes one filmable moment that fits in 4 to 8 seconds.

  • 02

    Sound written out

Ambience, effects and music are named, because Veo generates the sounds you describe.

  • 03

    Dialogue in quotes

Speakers are identified, and lines are short enough to finish before the clip ends.

  • 04

    Easy to adapt

Swap the subject, place or line and keep the structure that makes the shot work.

Anatomy of a Veo 3 prompt

Veo responds best to prompts written in the order a director thinks on set: what we see, what happens, how it is filmed and what we hear. A reliable template:

  • Subject: who or what is on screen, with one or two defining details
  • Action: the one thing that happens during the clip
  • Setting and light: place, time of day, weather and mood
  • Camera: shot size and movement, such as close-up, dolly-in or aerial
  • Sound: ambience, effects or music, named plainly
  • Dialogue: who speaks, and the line in quotes

Writing dialogue that fits 8 seconds

Spoken lines take time. About 15 to 20 words fit comfortably in an 8-second clip; longer lines get rushed or cut off. Name the speaker when two people are in the shot, and describe the delivery when it matters: whispers, shouts, laughs.

If Veo adds captions you did not ask for, add “no subtitles” to the prompt and regenerate. English dialogue is the most reliable; test other languages with Lite first.

Prompts for image to video

When you start from an image, the picture already defines the subject, style and light. Spend the prompt on motion, camera and sound: “The steam rises, the camera slowly pushes in, a kettle starts to whistle.” Gentle, physical motion keeps the clip faithful to the image.

Veo 3 prompt FAQ

What makes a good Veo 3 prompt?

One shot: a subject, one action, the setting and light, a named camera move, then the sound. Put dialogue in quotes with who says it, and keep it short enough for 8 seconds.

How do I make Veo 3 characters talk?

Write who speaks and the line in quotes: The chef looks up and says, “Taste this.” Keep it to one or two short sentences, and describe the delivery if it matters.

How do I stop Veo from adding subtitles?

Add “no subtitles” or “no on-screen text” to the prompt and generate again. Veo sometimes adds captions to dialogue scenes when the prompt does not rule them out.

Do these prompts work with Veo 3.1 Fast and Lite?

Yes. Every prompt works with all three models. Test with Lite or Fast to save credits, then render the version you like with Veo 3.1.

How long should a Veo 3 prompt be?

Two to four sentences is plenty. Lead with the subject and action, then add camera, light and sound; very long prompts make it harder for the model to follow every detail.

Which camera moves does Veo understand?

Common film terms work: close-up, wide shot, dolly-in, pan, tilt, orbit, tracking shot, crane, aerial drone, handheld and POV.
